Use only rainwater, distilled water, water from a Reverse Osmosis System, or water with TDS (total dissolved solids) of 50 or less. You can buy a TDS tester in the Supplies section of our website. You never want a Sarracenia plant to dry out, so we recommend that you keep the plant in a bowl or tray of water.

The Sarracenia can handle a wide temperature range. As long as the plant is sitting in water, it won’t be impacted by heat. Although this plant is hardy in northern zones, you must protect the rhizome from the excessive cold during the winter by planting it in a peat bog or placing it in a garage or shed window.

Sarracenia naturally go through dormancy during the winter will require a period of dormancy to continue growing larger each year. Keep your plant somewhere just above freezing, such as a greenhouse, garage, or basement. Make sure it’s getting as much natural sunlight as possible and keep the plant pot in a bowl or tray of water.
